Field Trip to Cascade Caverns

August 11, 2012

The society is planning a special field trip to Cascade Caverns (http://www.cascadecaverns.com/) near Boerne on August 11. What better way to keep cool than to spend some time underground! The caverns feature wonderful formations, fascinating fossils, and some interesting living wildlife. Did I mention that the cave is cool – 65 degrees? In addition to a cave tour, Dr. Steve Tomka, UTSA, will present a talk about a recent local archaeological excavation featuring a Late Archaic Indian site. If possible, another talk by a paleontologist may also be given regarding the plethora of fossils of ancient sea life and Ice Age mammals. The caverns are set in a beautiful park, with a small museum and many interesting outbuildings. Facilities are also available for camping and picnics.

Logistics: A special discount on tickets for the cave tours has been generously offered by Cascade Caverns! Adults will pay $7, and kids only $5! Your friends and families are most welcome! We will meet at Rudy’s BBQ off I-10 at Leon Springs Rd at 11:00am for lunch. If you do not want to eat, then please assemble there no later than 12:15pm! We will all carpool to the park from Rudy’s. The park is located on Cascade Caverns Rd, exit 543 from I-10, just three miles north from Rudy’s and three miles south from Boerne. Tour tickets can be bought upon arrival. Depending on the number of people going, we will take one or two tours. The first tour will take place at 1:00; the second (if needed) at 2:00. The lectures will take place when the last tour is finished. Drinks and snacks will be available during the lectures in a pavillon. The day will end no later than 5:00pm. This will be a very relaxing day; however, anyone with severe disabilities may prefer to forego the cave tours. At one point, the ceiling is low and requires people to stoop for a short distance.
Anyone interested in coming along please send me an email no later than Aug 9, if possible! I need to provide a head count to the park personnel on Aug 10. Hope to see you all there!
